If you are assuming a plant is hardy because it was sold locally, then I
think you might be wrong. I bought a Gaura at a local Walmart and I know
it won't be hardy here, but I have enjoyed it immensely since it blooms
all summer. As someone said on this list, it was worth the $7 even if I
only get this one season from it.
Chain store nurseries don't really pay much attention to the plants and
their particular requirements, which they are given to sell. There were
several other plants at the Walmart, K-Mart and Shop-Ko around here
which were definitely not meant for Wisconsin winter survival. Caveat
emptor.
As for hardy hibiscus, I don't know about them. There is a home in town
with two shrub-type plants in the front yard about 8 feet tall in bloom
now, one is pink, the other purple and I'm wondering if they might be? I
have wanted to go up , knock on the door and ask, but haven't screwed up
the nerve yet.
