Slugs

This year, we planted an extensive vegetable garden. We "gridded" the
garden area into 4x5 foot rectangles, which we heaped into 16" raised beds
with 12" paths in between. The beds stand on their own-- there are so
"sides" (wood, etc.) framing them.

Now my yard has a fair amount of slugs-- nothing catastrophic, but the
"usual", given that I live in the damp and moderate Pacific NW. But
interestingly, I have not seen ONE SINGLE SLUG in my raised vegetable beds.
Not one! I don't know if it's because the beds drain well and tend to have
a surface that is dry (compared to the other parts of the yard), of if the
little slimers simply don't like to climb up that rough, dry, vertical 14"
wall of dirt, but whatever it is, it has worked well.

Anyway, just wanted to share this. If this "technique" bears out, it could
be a good way to protect selected plants and/or beds.

(Now if there was only a way to elevate the entire yard!)
