As for hardy hibiscus, I don't know about them. There is a home in town
with two shrub-type plants in the front yard about 8 feet tall in bloom
now, one is pink, the other purple and I'm wondering if they might be? I
have wanted to go up , knock on the door and ask, but haven't screwed up
the nerve yet.

Barb,
The shrubs might be Hibiscus syriacus common names Althea or Rose of
Sharon. This is a tall vase shaped (10 ft tall by 8 ft wide), deciduous
shrub with green leaves with toothed margins. Bloom profusely in late
summer with 2-4 inch trumpet shaped flowers with the yellow-anthered white
stamens in pinks, purples, blues and white some with red centers that I am
aware of. There are also doubles available. They need part to full sun,
keep moist, hardy to -10 f. ( some references say -20 f.)
zones 5-9.
My H. moscheutos on the other hand dies to the ground in the winter, then
emerges late spring to early summer and has flowers that are 6-8 inches
across. Each only lasts a day but like daylillies they just keep coming.
They supposedly can attain 8 feet in height but mine in its third year is
about 3 feet. hardy zones 5-10.
