Hmm, I missed the original post, but I live in the SD area and Have a few
additional suggestions... though Bill certainly mentioned our most notable
gardens.
Quail Botanical Gardens is in Encinitas which is about 30 min north of
downtown SD and has a lovely collection, including plants from different
geographical regions, a subtropical fruit garden, local natives, etc.
If you are into visiting nurseries (which are somtimes the best places to
see plants), take some time to visit Buena Creek Nursery in San Marcos
(also about 30 min north of downtown). In addition to a great selection of
plants, Buena Creek has several interesting demonstration gardens. It is
one of my favorite places.
