I have also seen it listed as both - I think of it as a belligerent
annual (like cosmos or cleome, freely reseeding so one might think it
was a perennial).  I too, love this plant.  I think it is superior to
the *Goldstrum* in flower size and beauty.  I have had it go year to
year here in Zone 5 SE Wisconsin with little to no trouble at all. 
After a particularly hard winter, the *mother* plant may die out, but
the seedlings quickly fill in her place.

I'm glad to know someone else loves it as much as I.  The blooms last
forever as cut flowers too!
