Re: Clivia (Kaffir Liliy)

Dot:

I don't have any at present but did for years...a lovely plant (house type in
the Midwest) that for me flowered around March and as late as June. They can
become
enormous, and the leaves burn in direct light. After flowering keep it on the
dry side
but don't let it entirely dry out. The most important thing about these is
that they like
to be pot bound, so be sure that the roots fit comfortably into your
container (I used
unglazed clay) and that there isn't too much space but not tight. I used an
ordinary
house plant soil and fed I think with diluted by half a Miracid-type of food
about twice a month. As the plant grows, it's fleshy roots will eventually
begin to emerge from the
top of the soil. This is good - it encourages it to bloom. Don't repot it
unless the pot breaks or there isn't much soil left, and then repot it into
an only slightly larger container, just making it a comfortable fit - not too
much extra room - maybe for a finger to fit all the way around. I don't
recall that I did this more than every couple of years.

Good luck and hope this helps.

Joanie
