Nan,
I used to grow a lot of these for the pot plant trade. I very much
doubt if they could withstand temperatures much lower than around 5C
at the root even if kept bone dry during storage. Of course I could
be wrong, but I found the tubers very prone to rotting at temperatures
much lower than this. Low, near to freezing air temperature plus any
ground moisture is likely to cause severe problems.
You're so right about them though - I grew G. rothschildianum, G.
superba and the near dwarf, greenish tinged, orange yellow G. simplex.
Fabulous flowers but awkward growth style (in a pot at any rate). I
used to have a few which I kept at the old house and would bury the
pots at the base of a sunny wall and let the stems clamber through a
big Fuchsia fulgens. It was very effective.
