The monarch butterfly lays its eggs only on the milkweed family of
plants, and the caterpillars eat only the milkweed plants - nothing
else. Which, BTW, makes them unattractive to bird predators due to the
poisonous nature of the milkweed. The butterflies, however, will feed
on any nectar producing plant (like buddleia).
My latest chrysalis is black and my kids, too, are checking it
regularly!
