For sunny areas, why not try liriope? It comes in solid green and a
variegated form and grows no larger than 12" in my garden. Daylilies too
expensive? If you're not picky, you can get the common orange one for
free, I'm sure! I would love to give mine away as they have spread all
over the place and choked out even the weeds. As we all know, it is
difficult to kill them, too. Depending on what look you're trying to
achieve, I'd also consider the threadleaf coreopsis. They stay green and
ferny-looking all season and have those wonderful little yellow blooms. My
'Moonbeam' stays compact and spreads very well -- no more than 12". Looks
good with the variegated liriope.
