I had read once before that it was recommended that a person plant large
annuals (sunflowers, tithonia, cleome, etc.) in soil that had been
compacted. Their roots will help to break up the soil and they are less
picky about soil conditions. It gives the soil a chance to mellow before
planting something more permanent and will attract earthworms. I usually
mix up annuals and perennials in a new bed anyway to give a little color
the first year.
One other thing that helps is to add your organic amendments now and cover
the area with black plastic. This heats up the soil, kills weed seeds,
keeps in moisture which will attract soil organisms that will feed on the
amendments, and will give you nice soil to play with come spring.
