I agree with both Robert and Bill. I have done horrible things to dailyness,
from moving them in the heat of summer (and letting them dry out completely
because I forgot where I put them) to planting armloads of them in my
poorest, driest soil and yes, forgetting to water them. I'm not proud of such
neglect -- but amazingly, all those daylilies are going to town today * I
gained a lot of respect for daylilies that year.
NOW, when I pull
anything untimely from the ground, it goes straight into a 'holding
container' that has a good mix of leaf mold compost, potting soil mixed with
top soil, shredded bark, vermiculite and perlite and sometimes a little sharp
sand. I keep large left over tree containers half filled just for this
purpose because so often I don't have the time to replant properly.
I suppose even a bag of moist spagnum would do the
trick. Don't panic! If nothing else, do pot them in a little potting soil and
keep them watered but don't drown them. Hardy is the keyword here. When the
ground is ready, they'll be waiting in good health.
