Mary,

I don't put much clay in by volume, say a couple shovels full to a
wheelbarrow full of other stuff.  Plus, the granite grit helps keep stuff
draining well.  I think, if left for three years, you'd get some
compaction, but by that time, whatever mix you have used would compact.  I
found my mix without any clay was awfully light and seemed to be missing
something.  A bit of clay seems to help all around.  Not too much...takes a
bit of experimenting, I tell by the feel:-)  Have been known to make a
batch with too much and then have the 'pleasure' of repotting stuff in a
new mix....
