Re: bulb planting tools ?

Beth, my two favorite tools for planting bulbs are a trowel for prepared beds
and a spade for planting in grass or elsewere. Some people use a heavy-duty
drill and a long auger. Those bulb planting tools have failed me more than
once--if your soil is not so soft and friable that you can dig with your
fingertips, then the bulb planter is eventually going to come apart, or smash.

When I naturalize, I take the spade, insert it as deep as I can, reach down
and stick the bulb under the plug, and put the plug bag down over the bulb.
I don't know anyone who recommends this method, but it works for me and it's
relatively fast. Now, I would not use this method for a $10 bulb, but for a
fifty cent or less bulb I wouldn't hesitate.
