If I could add my two cents in on this subject I'd say that you should be
very careful about what brand of potting soil you should get. Stick with
brands that are recommended by others on this list -- I'd second them.
After buying many bags of soil that ended up as hard as adobe by
mid-summer, or buying what I thought was a reputable national brand and
getting a bag full of slimey sludge that had chunks of moss in it, I'd
stick to the tried-and-true. There's no point in wasting money. I do add
shredded bark and/or vermiculite to loosen soil and help make the
containers lighter. I always add the water-absorbing polymers to the soil
as well as Osmocote. Throughout the summer I try to water every other time
with a water-soluable fertilizer, too.

For tender plants that I bring in over winter, I totally replace the soil
every spring. The old soil gets added to the garden beds outside.
