Beth, When I have lots of bulbs to plant, I simply use
my favorite spade to dig a flat bottomed hole to the
proper depth. Then I arrange about 5 bulbs in the
hole, closely spaced. The number in the hole depends
on the affect that I want. If I'm naturalizing a large
area, then I'll do lots of holes, fairly close
together with only 3/hole. In any case, the bulbs can
spread outward (and do!), so putting them close
together inside the hole isn't a problem. In fact, the
plants tend to support themselves and not flop when
they're planted this way, so you get a very attractive
display, with less work.
Happy Gardening!
