Re: Fritillarias

As far as I know, the only fritillaria hardy to my area is F. meleagris.
I've tried it several times and, like others, have had a difficult time
getting them through the first winter.

However, if they survive the first winter, they seem to go on forever.
Well, maybe not forever, but I have a clump that started as a single bulb
about 7 years ago and is still multiplying.

I'm not sure why it's so difficult to get them started, but this fall I
started an experiment. My hypothisis is that it's too cold here and deeper
planting will help them survive.

I bought 20 bulbs (on sale) and planted 1/3rd at the recommended depth, 1/3
one bulb height lower, and the final third 2 bulb heights lower.

Now, I wait.
