That would be the Yiddish name, common in NYC. All NYC kids have some
Yiddish. Even the nuns who taught us could understand it. I have tried to
get Ed to spell the Polish name but he cannot find it in his memory,
something like "kartofelplintz."

In all cases, I cannot understand how any of the old folks passed forty
without clogged arteries. My mother was a nurse but her active days must
have preceded the cholesterol awareness. My grandfather, German, made
pumpernickel sandwiches with thick cut bacon which was all fat and put onions
on the sandwich. He made it to age 75, my father only to 55. We are all
having cholesterol tests these days.

As plants and all things containing living cells, genes must be the most
important as my Mom is 94 and still eating ice cream.

For the zone 4 gardeners with snow and ice on the ground, I have a second run
of Oxalis triangularis growing and in bloom, the Hebe 'Amy' blooming and
Bergenia ciliata growing huge with leaves 18 inches wide. These are
perennials, growing indoors with help from halogen lighting. For some
reason, November has been sending us snow and freezing rain every other day.
If you don't have some indoor growing space, you might consider a corner
somewhere. I love watching the new growth each day and the care is not time
consuming.
