tulips

Hi Everyone I have a question about tulips,...I have planted tulips for
years, only to have them come up a few years later as a single leaf bulb,
what causes this, they never revert back to what they once were the first
few seasons they came up and bloomed,? This year I planted 3200 bulbs,
of these 800 were tulips, every hole had a generous handful of bonemeal
added before the bulbs were placed in the holes. tom
