Not bad Paul, we break shovels here, too.  Quite a few of them over the 
years, some on old Hostas - maybe the hardest on shovels plus other overgrown 
perennials.  I am not especially strong and I have broken several shovels 
much to my surprise.  I would tend to look for a lightweight tool.  The right 
hand glove is also a casualty, they should be purchased right or left or two 
rights to a left. (reverse if you are a lefty)

You must tell us how the axes bit the dust, I am sort of wary of axes.  Ed 
uses them to chop out roots.  If you slipped.............
