Yes, the two fork method can work, but I've found you have to dig the
plant out of the ground first. It's murder on your back and the tools trying any other way.
I'm with all of you who use sharp knives. I have 2 sets of steak knives that were wedding presents 20 years ago that have been relegated to garden use. One set is serrated and one straight; and they each seem to have their respective uses. Nothing more satisfying than sticking a steak knife into the soil around a pernicious weed and carving it out of the soil! Makes me kind of sad that my ground is frozen . . . . .
