When an over grown clump is too hard to divide I use a pruning saw or a
bread knife. It has to be "my" knife since my husband collects knives
and is very upset with my using his knife, which is right there. Try
the sawing, it saves a lot of time and energy.
I also found a wonderful mattock just before it was to be auction off
that belonged to my father-in-law. I take that mattock every where I
go. One never knows when one will need it since I garden every where in
this county. It is light weight and seems to slice through the roots.
It does not have the pick on the other end to make it too heavy. Look
at the old tools. They are stronger and even I can break most of them.
