Again, simple economics. Collecting by the nature of the activity means those folks don't want what everyone else wants. The comments here about not wanting to pay the higher costs associated with "Plants" magazine points out the fact that many of you also don't want to pay the higher costs associated with new and very unusual perennials or the magazines that describe them - such as the new double Echinacea (or the ones coming along that have different colours - all of which will find themselves in my trial gardens this summer) :-)) The vast majority of gardeners are quite contented with the offerings of nurseries (Heritage Perennials for example produces approx 1600 varieties - enough for almost any gardener) If this group hesitates to pay the big bucks for new plants; you can imagine Ms. Homeowner when she gets to the perennial section and sees a Hosta 'Tattoo' for $50. or a double trillium for $100. ;-))
You make some good points, but I live in the same town as Heronswood and can go see new and exciting plants often and get many of them at a decent price. These plants are usually not newly introduced hybrids but collected from regions of the world. You are right that I don't want to pay 50 dollars for H. 'Tattoo' or a double trillium for 100 dollars.

Most of the time I wait patiently for the price to come down to a reasonable amount. I do consider myself a plant collector partly because I trial a lot of plants for introducing on my web site so others can know how they grow in my region of the PNW, and for clients that I design their gardens for. Partly because I love to garden and satisfy plant lusts. I guess I won't be one that will pay out huge bucks for a plant that will eventually come down in price.

I am going to try a subscription to three months of Plant magazine as I love seeing the new introductions. I did note on the magazine you can download that there were quite a few plants that were available last spring 2002 a year or two after the publication. I think that in itself makes it worth the money to be aware of what is up and coming in our region of the world.
