I think Gene will be pleased to get Plants; small nurserymen like
himself are really the intended audience, I think. I just couldn't resist
and subscribed a year ago, and while I've enjoyed it very much, I can't
really justify the cost for a home gardener like myself. I'd like to!
As far as the lag between when various plants are available over there
and when we can finally get our hands on them, it's usually 2-3 years, but
that double echinacea was in the last issue, so I was surprised to see it in
Wayside already. Plants does list some new offerings from North American
growers.
One of Plants' advertisers is Plant World in Devon (not to be confused
with another English "Plant World" that has a web site and has caused legal
trouble for Mr. Brown's operation). Plant World often has seeds available a
couple years before T&M and Chiltern's. Assuming that we will continue to be
able to import seeds, this way of growing the latest sooner is worth looking
at. One caveat: they offer seeds from plants that they grow, so you may be
getting seeds from named plants, not the same thing as getting the named
plant, of course. I've had lots of fun with their seeds.
As far as magazines, I too have let go of Horticulture, will probably
not renew Fine Gardening, and would let Organic Gardening go if it would let
go of me. (The subscription keeps getting extended as other magazines go
belly-up!) I really like the Avant Gardener.
Say a little prayer for me tonight - I have been interim organist and
choir director at our church for the last few months and the Christmas
services are my trial by fire. For a non-conservatory-trained musician,
trying to do this music thing competently can be as all-consuming as
gardening! Talk about your "growing experiences!"
Merry Christmas to all, I really appreciate you all even though I speak up
but rarely
