Why does almost no one carry Allium carinatum, Allium carinatum subsp. pulchellum, or Allium flavum in the States anymore? I used to be able to get them inexpensively from the standard sources, VanE, JS, B&BB, and M&Z. [Russell, I think they may have been too mundane for Odyssey] Now, no one but Brecks seems to carry them. I’m not fond of that company and they list these as a mix of 5 bulbs for $47 – on “sale” for $20. They seem to be available in Europe. Since the bed I have them in is getting overhauled soon, I fear they’ll be tilled under so I planned to order more. They seem to self-sow well, so I’m hoping scattering seed might work if I can find a US source. I’ve also lifted and potted (after flowering) many from the bed, hoping to place them in other beds soon. Do you think this will work considering my timing? I love these little sparklers – they always bloom around the 4th of July. Kitty |
