Thank you for all the suggestions of plants that may bloom in winter
through the snow.
Johnny Jump-ups (now that I know they are heartease under a
different guise) are certainly versatile as they persist year round
in our gardens in NZ too but seem to like summer shade. They are the
sort of plant that crops up everywhere but is easily weeded out and
are like English Marigolds in this respect. We have a small courtyard
which has a fine scoria base and becomes a home to many self sown
plants, (eg.bellis perennis) or persistent creepers and we rarely
have to add anything, just weed every now and again.
