How long plants last

I have been very gratified to hear all the responses by others who tend
to plant "one of everything". I am learning what will do well in my
rather new garden in a yellow pine and oak forest here in California,
and I also love the idea of having new plants, which I can marvel at.
And eventually many of them will spread, re-seed, or be good for
dividing, so I can have mass plantings in the future, if I wish.

I am sometimes confused, however, by plants which catalogs call
perennials, but which turn out to be "short lived". Do most foxgloves
live only two years? Pardancandas? I have seen this mentioned in some
catalogs, but mostly they are called perennials. Is there some way to
know the usual life span of perennials, other than observing? Most of
my books seem to mention this very seldom, usually when the lifespan is
very long or very short.
