Re: Cold Frame

on the Discovery Channel (or perhaps Home & Garden TV)... a quick,
cheap cold frame was shown: four straw bales formed the walls, a
discarded window covered the top -- and small blocks of wood served to
shim the window slightly open for circulation. Additional straw was
loosely scattered among the plants for further insulation. Haven't
tried it myself -- but hope to in the future for hardening off plants -
since our springs in this zone 5 can fluctuate (overnite) from frigid
winter to warm sunny days. I liked the idea that not only would it be
cheap and easy -- but very portable. I also plant tender seedlings and
then cover with large foam drinking cups (with the bottom broken out).
Protects from wind, hail, cold or too much heat. use these for spring
and fall plantings both.
