I had NO problem germinating Jacarandas -- the trick was getting them to
LIVE on. Both the Bauhinia and Jacarandas like HEAT -- I germinated
them outdoors in shade at the height of summer. However, the Jacaranda
is a DECIDELY zone 10 plant and will keel on you. As a potted plant,
it's not supposed to be big enough to flower, though it does have nice
foliage (mimosifolia).
Brudy's Exotics carries these and more and is in Houston. They do mail
order. I suggest them. Failing that, T&M and Chilterns carry both.
Again, these are tender woody plants. The Bauhinia *might* behave more
like a tender perennial in our z 8b, dying back to the ground and
resprouting. My zone 10 Jatrophas and Erythinas do this; Erythina
crista-galli is, I believe, a herbaceous perennial. Erythina
vespertilio, bat-winged coral bean, has unique bat-shaped leaves too
cool for words; it has come back from a freeze and is hard to kill,
but hasn't flowered for me.
