You should dig up your clump in October. Make sure that you have
a good sunny location to move them to with slightly acidic soil and
organic matter (such as compost).
Dig out the clump carefully and don't break or bruise the roots. Wash off
all of the soil, then cut each clump through the crown into a few pieces.
Each piece should have several buds (about 1/2" long) You should plant
the crown 1 to 2 inches below the soil level (the crown is where the
buds are).
If your soil isn't frozen yet you can do it now, or you can move them
in the spring if (and only if) you replant them immediately and do it
before new growth appears.
