Margaret, Our Oregon State University insect treatment catalog DOES call
them "black vine weevil", but they are commonly called (by the local
gardeners) "strawberry root weevils" or just plain "root weevils". And yes,
they are EVERYWHERE here in the northwest But I still have a had time
understanding how the larvae can chew woody peony root. Did the original
writer see notching on the peony leaves before the plant went dormant? Marilyn
