Another reason I've heard is that cat waste can transmit toximoplasmosis
(close to correct spelling?), a disease relatively harmless to adults but
dangerous for pregnant women because of the risk to the fetus. That's
why pregnant women are told never to change cat boxes. In actuality,
anyone who has been around cats has probably already contracted it and is
immune (fetus too), but I never told my husband that. Nine months
without having to do that work was great. :)
BTW, if you are pregnant and worried about the risk it is just as
dangerous to garden as to change the cat box because of the risk of cat
waste in the dirt. I did NOT pass on that fact to the hubby.
The main reason I've heard for not composting cat waste was the urine
though.
