Re: Fall Mums
Fall mums can be overwintered by placing the pots in plastic bags and
adding sufficient moisture to keep them from drying out. They can be
kept in a dark, cool, and dry place like a basement inside. Or if you
prefer you may just heal in the pots and in the garden outside and mulch
them with something that will not smother them. Wet leaves are the the
worst. Most mum growers recommend pine bows or breathable loose mulches.
Straw will also pack down. I recommend rose cones or other foam
container left over . Cut the stems back to about 4 - 6 " tall. Mums
planted in protected areas i.e. along side the east or south side of the
house or building will be protected. Mums are like strawberry plants
in that the cycle of freezing and thawing and then freezing and thawing
repeatedly will kill them. Once dormant you want to keep them that way.
They are easy to propagate and it is really a lot of fun too.
