Last Christmas my true love gave to me a miniature red rose (from
Jackson & Perkins). It did OK in the house, in first the south facing
window and then the east one as spring approached. I summered it outside
in a mostly shady portion of the deck and it bloomed off and on. But
when I brought it inside as the frost threatened, it got hysterical and
dropped most of it's leaves. I cut it back severely and new growth is
appearing slowly.
This Christmas I got another - a miniature yellow one this time.
The best care is not to let them dry out nor sit with soaking wet
feet--as the poor red one did a few times during the summer rains and
managed to survive. As the days begin to lengthen at the end of the
month, I will start all the indoor plants including the roses on a weak
fertilizer solution.
Another popular Christmas gift plant are Amaryllis which I've been
almost too successful keeping from year to year (they are multiplying
and I must have over a dozen now - in three or four colors).
