Re: blackberry bushes/Chester

Janice-
I too have been looking over Miller's catalog (for raspberries and
asparagus). My current "bible" for fruit production is the "Small scale
Fruit Production" book put out by the College of Ag. Sciences at Penn
State. It really focuses on what's best in the Pennsylvania area, but
they say that thornless blackberries can be grown in the warmer areas of
PA. I'm surprised Don did well with them in zone 5 (even if he didn't
like them!). The Chester are described as slightly sweeter and hardier
than Dirksen (a variety described as consistent, hardy, with excellent
quality and flavor). Do note that they equate "sweeter" with "less
tart". I say go for the raspberries! If you want I can copy and mail
their info to you (it covers cultivars, fertilizing, pest, pruning,
fertilizing etc.)
