Re: Hellen Ballard of Hellebore Fame

Hello Graham,
Thanks for taking the time to reply at a bit of length. I appreciate that.
You are a bit late on suggesting your title on hellebores. I have had a copy for some time now. I thoroughly enjoy the photos and text written by you and Ms.Strangman.
I had corresponded with Will McLewin a bit and was surprised to find him in there as well ... with his own little section.
    Good job.    Gene

Sadly, Helen Ballard died in 1995. She did not write a book on hellebores herself although there is a hard-to-find book about her. I could only find it via http://www.bibliofind.com. This is their entry:

Schmiemann, Gisela: Helen Ballard, the Hellebore Queen; 40 Beautiful photos of her 51 named Helleborus orientalis hybrids she bred over a period of 30 years. Died in 1995 - handed her collection over to the author. Quality production. Offered for sale by FLORILEGIUM at AUD85.00. Florilegoium can be contaced at florileg@ozemail.com.au.

The book is also sold at the Royal Horticultural Society bookshop at Wisley near London. You can contact them at mailorder@rhs.org.uk but the book is not listed on the website.

Can I also suggest my own book? It has a chapter on Mrs Ballard whom I visited while preparing the book. Go to http://discoveringannuals.com/otherbooks/hellebore.html for details.
