Hi Carleen,
Almost every seed has its own needs for successful germination. It sounds
like you need a good book on seed starting - and there are many available.
Also use your search engine to access some of the fine web sites on
propagation.
Some seeds need light to germinate, some need dark. Some need warm, some
need cold, some need cold-warm-cold, some need warm-cold-warm. As you can
see the "recipes" are numerous. It also makes very good reading on a long
winter's night :).

Call me green!
Can I also toss out my Nasturium, Sweet Peas, Cosmos, Salvia
(Transylvanica), Lavatera, Nigella, Nicotiana, Hardy Blue Geraniums and
Chamomile (german) out right now? How do I know what I can plant now, and
what I should plant in spring? I take it I must also toss some soil over
these seeds!
