Perhaps I should unlurk - having been reading for a while. There's lots of
very useful propagation resources out there as you'll discover when you get
to the Net. One of the most useful (IMHO) is a book written by Dr. Norman
Deno (It sits on the easy to reach shelf next to my desk along with a very
few select reference texts) titled Seed Germination Theory and Practice.
While it is an imposing title, it revolutionized the seed germination of
perennial plants. Dr. Deno brought a very scientific mind as a retired
Professor Emeritus of Chemistry to the problems of seed germination to the
problems of getting seeds (especially rare ones) to germinate reliably.
His book can be purchased directly from him at 139 Lenor Dr. State College,
PA, 16801.
While summaries of his work are available at the alpine-l archives, if you
are interested in a shorter and easier summary, you could visit the
articles section of my web site at

There are three articles there on seed germination based on Dr. Deno's
methods. While they are listed as 1,2,and 3, they were written over a
longer period of time and don't necessarily connect together well. The data
is there though in basic form.
