Re: RE:Hellebore companions

Hello Marilyn,
Sorry, no photos of the Hellebore niger Sunset Red. They bloomed for the first
time last year and the first blooms are not always the best indicators of what is
to come. As I mentioned, I did select one I liked best from the group. will watch
again this year to see if another pops up of exceptional interest in color. Then I
will have two in bloom for crossing to obtain be best color strain.
I, too, have a fondness for primula. It would be hard to select one or two
species out of all the wonderful species and hybrids there are out there to play
with in the garden. If I could only have one out of all I have grown... probably
P. sieboldii, the Japanese Woodland Primula. Love this little critter..... Leaves
like little bib lettuce all crinkled and ruffled, blooms in spite of what ever
weather hits it and blooms heavily. All kinds of bloom shapes out there along with
colors. Easy to grow in this area. If it gets too dry the Primula simply goes
dormant and returns next spring.
Another name of Omphalodes verna around here is Creeping Forget Me Not. Lovely
with the emerging burgundy stems of the variegated Solomon's Seal. Later the
foliage creeps into and around the white and green with pink tinted stems of SS.
Try the alba from with Trillium lutea and Red Stemmed Lady Fern.
