Surprise lily?

I've been sick the last week or so, so I've had a LOT of time to do
nothing more vigorous than thinking. I got to thinking about my
surprise lilies, and what ever happened to them. The foliage came up in
spring, very healthy and lush, and then disappeared about mid-summer,
just as I expected. But they never bloomed! Since I had no foliage to
remind me of them, I completely forgot about them until this *enforced*
contemplation session.
Any ideas as to why they didn't bloom?
