I shred any non-glossy paper (including stuff from my laser printer) and
spread it out *under* my cedar bark walkways. It decomposes quickly and
seems to attract worms and other critters. I don't do anything glossy,
gummy, or plasticine.
As a side note, I've found that putting things under my bark walkways is
a good way to get rid of them when the compost heap is too full. Every
year I get rid of many tarps full of leaves that way... The walkways
are springy for a couple of weeks, but after a while then compact.
This is slowly leading to slightly raised walkways from which I can
rotate out soil with the beds.
