Hi Barb,
> Can you tell me some more about winter jasmine?
I see by your zone you will have no trouble growing it. I love winter
jasmine, but I have to tell you from the beginning, there is NO fragrance
:-(.
Winter jasmine, or jasmine nudiflorum, is a rather shrubby/floppy plant that
I actually train through my 4' chain link fence. The stems are clean,
spring green. The flowers are small and bright yellow, and in my garden
this winter star begins to flower about December and continues on through
nearly April or so. In front of this I have a sasanqua camellia,
'Yuletide,' which is deep, velvety red with yellow stamens. It is a cheery
winter combination for months.
I grow jasmine nudiflorum on the north side of my property and have read
that it could actually be grown against the north side of a house,
tolerating nearly complete shade. That said, I'm sure it tolerates full
sun, too. A very congenial plant!
It does put down roots wherever it touches the ground so there are usually
plants to share with those who are interested -- and you'll always have
takers since there is so little that really blooms in winter.
As to size, I have read 10' x 10' but it is easily managed by pruning and
training. I just train the branches horizontally through my fence and every
few years whack it all back. If grown without support, I suppose it would
grow like a large, mounded shrub. It believe I have read it would even grow
well as a ground cover on a difficult slope, especially with its affinity
for rooting when touching the ground.
I wouldn't be without it for winter color.
