RE: Solanum crispum 'Glasnevin' (sp??)

Connie, the last 3 years have been very mild.  This winter we've literally
had 3-4 frosts only at night!  We did have more than our annual rain fall
last year, and that's prodigious even in a "dry" year, being Oregon ;-)  I
had the opportunity to hear Tracy DiSabato-Aust a few weekends ago and she
mentioned that in her studies in school, she found she could freeze to death
the roots of plants, but give them too much water, and they were goners.

The one thing we have had, in my particular microclimate is dry, cold east
winds 2-3 times this winter for nearly a week at a time where the wind chill
would be 4 degrees and the actual temperature 30 or so.

This did blow the plant every which-a-way because I didn't have it tied
properly to the trellising.  The first year it didn't do much, that was an
El Nino year.  Last year it looked good, a La Nina year, with a late, cold
spring and a very wet year overall.  This year we are just not having winter
practically and it is huge, as mentioned.

For the $9 investment I planned on replacing it every few years if
necessary.  Everyone who sees this plant in the garden "has" to have one.  I
have become so enamoured with the plant I am going to try the white variety
this year with a red climbing rose (yum!).

I do have this plant in a prime location in my garden; I have a long
"rambler wall" (for rambling roses) on the south side of my property.  Lots
of heat, no trees, etc., great soil.  I train it through some yellow roses
which is a great combination (the vine has blue flowers with a yellow eye).

The only negative thing I have to say about it is that the branches do seem
to be fairly fragile, at least at this time of year.  As I was wrestling
with all the new growth in training it last weekend, if I was not careful I
would break branches, even 1/2" in diameter.  I guess I'm used to roses that
don't break easily and fight back if you try to strong arm them (thorns).
It was not a problem because there was so much growth I would have thinned
it somewhat anyway.
