The easiest way is to use layering.
In the spring take a few stems and cover a three inch section with dirt.
In a year or two you can cut those stems from the main plant and trim the
tops off and replant your rooted pieces.
When replanting, the pieces should be planted 2 inches deeper than they were
covered.
Clematis like deep moister retentive soils that stay cool.
The roots will spread out a few feet in all directions when the plant is
grown properly.
