Hi Valerie, I have used Lamium 'White Nancy' and L. 'Pink Pewter at the
base of my dark purple Hellebores. Both have a nice silvery sheen that
reflects a lot of light and compliments the Hellebores. Anything with
silvery leaves or white variegation should do it. Also, you could use the
variegated Jacob's Ladder if it doesn't make you too dizzy. I find it has
the same effect on me as trying to iron a navy blue/white polka dot dress!

I have 1 crocus and 1 snowdrop :-), plus winter jasmine, hellebores, mahonia
and viburnum in bloom but am worried about the leaves opening on Buddleja
alternifolia, hydrangea and others. Alliums are about 6" high, as are
tulips, daffs and various perennials. My Asphodeline has not died back
either - dreading a really cold spell.
My cry for help though concerns my hellebore - it is a dark wine colour and
does not show up against the bare soil around it. Any suggestions as to
what I should plant behind it so that next year it will be more easily seen?
