Windy:
I guess living in zone 9 has it's advantages and disadvantages. Having a
nice sunny 80 degree day in February is nice but it won't kill the bugs. I'm
afraid that after 2 mild winters in a row that the bugs will be especially
bad this year.
Also, having the mild winter doesn't allow my plants to actually
sleep...seems when they don't get their winter rest they don't bloom as well
during the growing season. The best "overall" gardening year I had was after
one of our "hardest" winters, everything bloomed beautifully in the heat of
the summer. After the mild winter of '98/'99 I had plenty of foliage growth
but I didn't get the color I so look forward to.
Since, at this point, my plants aren't getting their winter beauty sleep,
they are very vunerable to any future cold front with freezing temps we may
have this winter. I'm more liking to loose something to a freak freeze than
I am when there is continuous cold weather.
I guess we all have our ups and down when it comes to gardening....on the
plus side of things, I have an orchid tree (baunhemia) in full bud and ready
to burst into bloom and my pink jasmine is loaded and ready to release it's
sweet, sweet spring fragrance.
Happy Gardening
