Hey Kemberly,
I have *The Well-Tended Perennial Garden*, too, and was just reading her
chapter on fertilizing last night. She says that for heavy feeders,she does
use a spring application of fertilizer, such as 12-12-12 or 5-10-10, and
then a summer foliar feeding with something like Peter's 20-20-20. For
everything else, though, she STRONGLY emphasized bed prepartion with plenty
of compost and then topdressing(2") with finished compost in the spring.
