I do the same and when I water in the mid and late spring I usually use a 1/4
strength water soluable fert with even numbers. I like to hear other's
methods and and compare them to my own and make adjustments if they seem
reasonable.
I usually do not fertilize with my waterings during the heat of summer - some
say this is when your plants need it most....I have not been convinced of
this yet.
Ironically - I didn't fertilize my hibiscus' last year and they bloomed
beautifully but they all had been repotted in the spring with a mixture of
"good" potting soil and compost.
