Mary,
If the overhang means that it was near a house or building it could be a
case where Lime from the foundation could have leeched into the soil, even
though you took a PH reading, the PH deeper in the soil could have been
higher. We had a problem with a holly planted near the house with the same
problem years ago. We finally had to dig around it and add acidifying
material deeper in the soil.
I have grown Casablanca with mixed results. I think the soil was the main
culprit. I read later that lilies like soil with lots of organic matter. My
soil was rather heavy and full of clay.
