Perhaps that is the problem.  Oriental lilies are heavy feeders. They can be 
sickly pale when lacking sufficient nutrients.  The iron would have made more 
nutrients available, which explains why they responded for a while, until the 
newly available nutrients were depleted.  I suggest a regular program of 
fertilizing this year.  --Janis
