Bill,
I remember your comments from last year and I had planned on painting them
this year like you did. I love the look of those globes in the garden. I
have echinops ritro, but those are much smaller.
By the way, I think my success is based on sheer neglect. I have these
planted near my roses, all of which are either rugosas or other carefree
types. I provide little if any additional water during the summer. As a
result, the alliums are shaded by the roses' foliage during the heat of the
summer and they stay nice and dry. Come to find out, this makes them
happy. I also have combined trumpet lilies in the same border and they are
multiplying like mad, too. The nepeta 'Six Hill Giant' likes the same
conditions, so it is reseeding around the roses' feet. All of this makes
for a carefree, happy bunch. Which, of course, makes me very happy, too.
